Ever woken up groggy after eight hours but felt fine on six? It comes down to sleep cycles. We sleep in roughly 90-minute cycles, and waking at the end of a cycle feels far more refreshing than being pulled out of deep sleep. Use the free sleep cycle calculator below to find the best time to go to bed or wake up.
Sleep Cycle Calculator
Wake up refreshed by timing your sleep in 90-minute cycles.
A full sleep cycle is about 90 minutes; most adults need 5 to 6 cycles (7.5 to 9 hours).
How do sleep cycles work?
During the night you move through repeating cycles of light sleep, deep sleep and REM (dream) sleep. Each full cycle lasts about 90 minutes, and a healthy night is made up of five or six of them. Waking at the end of a cycle, during lighter sleep, feels natural and refreshing. Waking in the middle of deep sleep is what leaves you groggy, even after a long night, a feeling known as sleep inertia.
How many hours of sleep do you need?
Most adults do best on 7.5 to 9 hours, which is five to six complete cycles. Teenagers usually need more, and needs shift a little with age. The calculator above works backwards or forwards in 90-minute blocks so your alarm lands between cycles. It also adds about 15 minutes, the average time it takes to drift off.
Tips for better sleep
Timing helps, but habits matter too. Keep a consistent bedtime, avoid screens and caffeine in the hours before bed, keep your room cool and dark, and get some daylight in the morning to anchor your body clock. If you regularly struggle to sleep or wake unrefreshed despite good habits, it is worth speaking to a doctor.
Frequently asked questions
Is it better to sleep 6 hours or 8 hours?
It depends on where your alarm falls. Six hours (four cycles) can feel better than a broken seven and a half hours if it means waking between cycles. That said, most adults need seven to nine hours regularly, so six hours should be the occasional exception, not the norm.
Why do I feel tired after 8 hours of sleep?
You were probably woken in the middle of a deep sleep phase. Aligning your wake time with the end of a 90-minute cycle, as this calculator does, usually helps you feel more rested.
How long does it take to fall asleep?
For most people it is around 10 to 20 minutes. This calculator assumes about 15 minutes. If you regularly take much longer, look at your wind-down routine and screen use before bed.
